Finding solutions to a global crisis at the local level
Climate change is everywhere: intensifying storms, hurricanes, heatwaves and wildfires, as well as slow-burning disasters like drought and famine - all of which hit vulnerable communities the worst as Cottage Grove experienced last year with a series of extreme climate events: snow; flooding; and fire.
Rising sea temperatures and increasing acidity levels threaten all aquatic life. Worldwide, over one million species are facing extinction due to extreme weather, habitat loss, and pollution. The loss of over 18 million acres of forests annually, is destroying the very mechanism designed to filter carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and mitigate climate change.
In the face of all this, what can one small town do?
Take Action! Climate Action Cottage Grove was formed in the summer of 2019 to organize the Global Climate Strike & March held in Cottage Grove on September 20, 2019. Over 500 students and other community members participated in a march on Main Street and rally in Bohemia Park.
Since then, Climate Action Cottage Grove, Forest Web, and Sustainable Cottage Grove have held an educational series of films and lectures on the environmental issues facing the planet at this critical time. Along with these presentations, Climate Action Cottage Grove and their partner organizations are organizing the Climate Action Town Hall for community members and local officials to participate in a forum on ways our town can reach the goal of being carbon neutral by the year 2030. More events, workshops, films, and presentations will follow in the future, continuing the campaign for a carbon neutral Cottage Grove!
